Cudahy : Residential Trash Contract

Share

The Cudahy City Council has awarded a 10-year exclusive residential trash collection contract to Consolidated Disposal Service of Santa Fe Springs.

The council Tuesday voted 4 to 0, with Mayor Bill Colon abstaining, for the franchise to haul trash from single-family and multifamily residences with no more than four dwelling units. The contract is scheduled to start Sept 1.

City Manager Gerald Caton said 3,000 customers will be served by Consolidated. The remainder of the commercial and residential population is served by more than 10 different private trash collectors.

Recently the city had considered awarding citywide trash collection franchises to one or more haulers but decided against it after much protest from a majority of the haulers.

Consolidated replaces Laidlaw Waste Systems Inc., which had held the residential contract for more than 10 years. Consolidated, Laidlaw and Murcole of Compton had all submitted proposals.

The city staff recommended Consolidated because of some of the features it offered, including free street sweeping twice a week in the 1.1-square-mile city of 20,000 and a $300 monthly contribution for charitable purposes, Caton said.

Residents will pay a monthly fee of $6.70 that will be reduced by 50% or $3.35 to senior citizens.
