Gov. George Deukmejian announced Saturday that he will meet with the heads of government in Australia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and South Korea during a two-week Pacific trade trip beginning July 22.

It will be the governor’s third major foreign trade trip in 18 months, after having traveled to Japan and Europe early in 1987. Previously, his only trip abroad had been during a stint in the Army in the 1950s.

Deukmejian, providing details of his trip in his weekly Saturday radio broadcast, said he will be conferring with government and business leaders in “some of the Pacific region’s most dynamic economies--those with great potential for expanded commercial ties.”

“Promoting free trade is good for the free world and it can mean more jobs for the people of California,” he said.

Deukmejian will spend almost a week in Australia, where he will meet with Prime Minister Robert Hawke in Canberra, address the American Chamber of Commerce in Sydney and represent the state during “California Day” at Expo ’88 in Brisbane.

In Hong Kong, Deukmejian will meet with acting Gov. David Ford and participate in a department store promotion of California food products.
