Hundreds of scholars and writers from around the world gathered in Oxford, England, for the International Holocaust Conference on the impact of Nazi genocide on the modern world. In an opening speech, Czechoslovakian-born newspaper publisher Robert Maxwell appealed to Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev to “disclose the truth” about Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who disappeared in Hungary while helping save thousands of Jews from Nazi gas chambers in 1944. The conference, which has drawn more than 500 participants from 48 countries, is studying the impact of the Holocaust on the contemporary world and the role of Christianity “in creating a climate of opinion that made it possible.”
