Local News in Brief : Fewer Aid Recipients

The number of people receiving welfare and unemployment benefits dropped slightly in April from the previous month, according to Los Angeles County officials. The Department of Public Social Services aided 893,693 people in April, a decrease of about 0.2% from March.

The county’s civil unemployment rate decreased to 4.3% in April from 4.4% in March. Those figures show 4,097,000 employed in April and 175,000 unemployed.

The Social Security Administration aided an estimated 247,000 elderly, blind and disabled people through the Supplemental Security Income program.

The number of applications for all forms of aid declined 11% in April, to 36,761 from March’s 41,538.
