The San Diego Foundation for the Performing Arts and Sushi Gallery will receive grants of $15,500 and $12,100, respectively, from the National Endowment for the Arts next year. It’s a sizable increase for the Sushi, which received $8,400 for dance this year from the NEA. Sushi founding director Lynn Schuette speculated that the company may have received the award because, “We’ve been showing nationally prominent artists, and that’s what the NEA is interested in funding.” The $15,500 Foundation for the Performing Arts grant is a $500 decrease from last year’s NEA grant. The smaller award reflects a smaller budget and the smaller companies that the foundation will be presenting, said Fred Colby, the foundation’s financial consultant.
