Irvine Council Votes Ban on Gay, Minority Discrimination

Share

A proposed human rights ordinance, which would ban discrimination against gays and other minority groups in housing and employment, was approved by the Irvine City Council on a 4-0 vote Tuesday night.

The ordinance will take effect in 30 days.

The council gave preliminary approval to the measure last month after a heated five-hour public hearing, attended mostly by religious leaders and conservative family groups who denounced the measure’s protection of gays. The ordinance also bans discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital status and physical handicap.

Only one member of the audience spoke against the proposed ordinance before Tuesday night’s vote.
