U.S. Ambassador Richard Melton said today that the American diplomats ousted from Nicaragua were singled out “with malice and forethought” for contacting the opposition but had not engaged in any prohibited activities.

Melton, who met with President Reagan at the White House, also said the reprisal expulsion Tuesday of eight Nicaraguan diplomats from the United States was a “preliminary response” and that further actions are under consideration in the escalating war of wills between the two countries.

Melton firmly denied charges that he and the other Americans had had a hand in weekend demonstrations opposing the Marxist-led Sandinista government.
