Share

Orange County Supervisor Don R. Roth has been appointed by Gov. George Deukmejian to the Bi-state High Speed Rail Commission, which has been commissioned to develop plans for a high-speed train between Anaheim and Las Vegas.

Roth, a former mayor of Anaheim, will be Orange County’s representative on the 16-member panel. He will be among eight California representatives on the commission and is one of four to be appointed by Deukmejian.

The train project will be privately financed and is expected to be completed in 1995. Supporters say projections indicate the project could create 11,000 jobs in California and generate $1.4 billion in construction expenditures. The total construction cost is expected to be $1.5 billion.

The state-of-the-art train, similar to those operating in Europe and Japan, will be able to transport travelers between Anaheim and Las Vegas in 70 minutes.
