Surgeons divided the liver of one child and transplanted it into two infants in the first double liver transplant performed in the United States, a hospital spokesman said. In the two transplants, spanning about 12 hours, the liver of a 1-year-old Illinois youngster who had died in an accident was divided and transplanted into a 7-month-old girl and a 12-week-old boy, University of Chicago Medical Center spokesman John Easton said. The infants were in critical and stable condition.
