Israeli troops and their Christian Lebanese allies, backed by helicopter gunships, clashed with Muslim guerrillas inside Lebanon, an army spokesman said. According to eyewitnesses, four Israeli helicopter gunships attacked several villages in southern Lebanon some three miles north of Israel’s self-proclaimed security zone in support of Israeli troops and their militia allies from the South Lebanon Army. The Islamic Resistance, a coalition of Muslim groups that includes the pro-Iranian Hezbollah, said its fighters “killed or wounded 20 Israeli soldiers” in the battle. In Tel Aviv, the Israeli army said three guerrillas and an Israeli soldier were killed in the fighting.
