Area Roundup : Gonzales, Olympic Gold Medalist, to Fight in Irvine

Paul Gonzales will face Javier Diaz in a 12-round flyweight division fight on July 25 at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

Gonzales, the flyweight gold-medal winner in the 1984 Olympics, is 8-1 after he lost a 12-round decision to Ramon Medel in June. In May, Gonzales defeated Jorge Ortega in a 10-round fight. Diaz is 40-13.

In a preliminary fight, undefeated Genaro Hernandez (13-0) is scheduled to face Luis Hernandez.

The first fight on the card will feature Dave Kilgore and Larry Dupree in a 12-round light-heavyweight bout.

Mac O’Grady, winner of the 1986 Hartford Open and 1987 Tournament of Champions, will give a golf exhibition as part of the Trabuco Hills High School tournament Wednesday at Coto de Caza Golf Club.

O’Grady will hold the exhibition at 10 a.m. The tournament, which will benefit the Trabuco Hills athletic programs, will follow the exhibition.

Entry fee is $150, which includes greens fees with a cart, free drinks, lunch, dinner and a golf shirt.

Sign-ups are under way for the summer festival softball tournament July 23 at Hart Park in Orange.

The tournament is open to men’s C and D teams. The entry fee is $150, with each team guaranteed at least three games.

David Alduenda of Fountain Valley, Colin Morris of Costa Mesa and Cheryl Suzuki of Santa Ana have qualified for the karate competition at the Junior Olympics, which will be held Aug. 7-12 at Lawrence, Kan. All three won medals in their age groups at the Amateur Athletic Union National Karate Championships, which were held last weekend in Richmond, Va.
