CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines — Policemen defending a besieged town hall fought off heavily armed Communist rebels in a clash Friday that left three guerrillas and one policeman dead, a military spokesman said Saturday.
Army division commander Col. Rogelio Villanueva said about 100 New People’s Army insurgents surrounded the town hall of Lianga on southern Mindanao Island, 540 miles south of the capital.
He said 18 policemen guarding the town hall were warned about the attack. They barricaded the area with sandbags, opened fire on the rebels, then called in military reinforcements.
