MOSCOW — Authorities in Soviet Lithuania have announced they will grant official status to the banned scarlet, green and yellow flag that flew over the Baltic state before its incorporation into the Soviet Union in 1940.
The announcement by Lithuanian Communist Party Secretary Algirdas Brazauskas at a mass meeting in Vilnius on July 9 was met with an ovation and the singing of the Lithuanian national anthem, the republic’s party newspaper Sovetskaya Litva said.
Laws, which have not been applied recently, provide sentences of up to three years in prison for anyone displaying the old flag.
