Soul musician Ike Turner was sentenced Monday to one year in jail for possessing and transporting cocaine.
“You’re not just abusing yourself, you’re abusing others. That’s what you’re being sentenced for. You’re a trafficker in drugs,” Santa Monica Superior Court Judge James Albracht told Turner at the sentencing hearing.
The judge ordered that Turner be taken into custody immediately and begin serving one year in County Jail. Turner was also placed on three years’ probation.
A jury convicted Turner, 56, on March 18 of possessing and transporting cocaine. Police stopped Turner, former husband of pop star Tina Turner, for driving erratically in West Hollywood on Aug. 9, 1987, and found 5.6 grams of rock cocaine in the car.
