BEIJING —
Sizzling summer heat baking southern China has left 290 people dead in Nanchang, one of the furnace cities along the Yangtze River, news reports said Monday.
Officials said the heat wave, which has sent temperatures in southern China soaring above 100 degrees for several weeks, was among the worst ever recorded in the city. Most of the casualties have been ill or elderly people.
Hundreds of thousands of residents have been sleeping in parks and public squares in an attempt to escape the heat.
