Eli Lilly & Co. reported record second-quarter profit of $180.7 million, compared to the year-ago period. The Indianapolis health and agricultural products firm said sales totaled $1 billion, up 10%. Results were credited to growth in all business segments and strong international sales. Merck & Co.’s second-quarter net rose 35% to $316.3 million from a year ago. Sales for the Rahway, N.J.-based health products organization totaled $1.5 billion, up 20%. The company cited its new products and strong volume gains in domestic and international operations. Upjohn Co.’s earnings climbed 12% to $88 million in the second quarter from a year ago. Sales totaled $722 million, up 8%. The Kalamazoo, Mich. company said the results reflected strong sales in pharmaceuticals and continued growth in its agricultural business.
