American Cyanamid Co. reported record second-quarter earnings of $99.5 million, up 14% from a year ago. Sales totaled $1.2 billion, up 15%. The Wayne, N.J., biotechnology and chemical company cited market acceptance of new products and technology, and new marketing programs. Monsanto Co. reported record second-quarter profit of $220 million, up 43% from the year-ago period. Sales at the St. Louis-based maker of pharmaceuticals, agricultural products and specialty chemicals were $2.26 billion, up 11%. Results were attributed to growth in its agricultural and NutraSweet Co. operations and to the repurchase of 7 million shares of common stock.
