Peace in Nicaragua

The denial of Melton’s involvement in activities designed to purposely destabilize the Nicaraguan government shouldn’t be taken at face value. Given the history of the Reagan Administraton’s lies and deceptions, a congressional investigation into the truth of the matter is only appropriate.

In April, 1983, Ronald Reagan said that the U.S. does not seek to destabilize, overthrow or impose some form of government on Nicaragua.

On April 8, 1984, (former Secretary of Defense) Caspar Weinberger said that the U.S. is not mining Nicaraguan harbors.

On Oct. 4, 1986, Assistant Secretary of State Elliott Abrams, in response to the capture of U.S. citizen Eugene Hasenfus, said that the U.S. government was not engaged in nor knew of any secret operations against the government of Nicaragua.

In each of the above cases the information given by the Nicaraguan government turned out to be more accurate than the information given by the White House. Why should this case be any different? When will Congress stop its knee-jerk reactions?

In any event, this incident shouldn’t be used as a pretext for more aid to the Contras!
