Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said second-quarter earnings were $146.4 million, down 4.6% from a year ago because of an accounting change involving the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. The San Francisco-based utility also announced that earnings for 1988 “virtually will be eliminated” because of a $500-million writeoff from the tentative settlement of the Diablo Canyon rate case.
