Local News in Brief : Laguna Niguel : Waste Water to Be Used for Irrigation of Park

Share

Waste water usually piped into the ocean will be reclaimed and used to irrigate landscaping at Laguna Niguel Community Park, according to John V. Foley, general manager of the Moulton Niguel Water District.

The park at Crown Valley Parkway and Niguel Road is expected to use 70 acre-feet (about 22.8 million gallons) of water per year at a cost of $19,347. This represents a savings of more than $4,000 over the cost of water that goes into homes and which has been used at the park until now, officials said.

Agreement on the water project, which will start in about a year, was reached between the water district and the Laguna Niguel Community Services District. The project will be funded with a low-interest loan from the state under provisions of the Clean Water Bond Act of 1984, Foley said.

The reclaimed effluent will be treated at the Aliso Water Management Agency-Moulton Niguel Water District joint regional plant in Laguna Niguel.

Foley said reclaimed water is already being supplied for irrigation of landscaping at the Mission Viejo Country Club, El Niguel Country Club and on some freeway slopes.
