South Korean police said they have destroyed the criminal records of about 38,000 people sent to military “re-education” camps in a 1980 crackdown on dissent. The names were removed from police computers and other lists to prevent unfair treatment of former suspects, the police said. Former President Chun Doo Hwan sent tens of thousands of people to army barracks for periods of four to six months in 1980 after he seized power. Dissidents said many were anti-government activists innocent of any crimes.
