Wayne Newton at the Celebrity : McDonald Performance
- Share via
I take issue with Mike Boehm’s comments regarding Michael McDonald’s performance (“McDonald So Predictable Takin’ It to the Coach House,” Calendar, July 18).
Try as I might, I have never understood what critics have against a strictly-the-hits type of show. Who cares if the man has been on vacation for two years? He can take as long as he likes. Perhaps Mr. Boehm has a quota of new material required per performer bi-annually?
McDonald delivered a lively, uplifting performance of his past material, just exactly what this fan wanted to hear. It also didn’t seem to bother those around me (clapping along and dancing in the aisles) that his was a ‘formulaic’ sound. And with regard to his stage manner, which Boehm described as “bland comments” and lacking in personality, I thought he came across as an unegotistical, friendly and very down-to-earth performer.
Besides, if I’d wanted flamboyance and sap, I would have gone to see the Wayne Newton show in Anaheim instead.
