Apparently U-2 can’t figure out what to do with its new album. The upcoming record was initially conceived as a live double album, largely made up of songs recorded during its 1987 tour, plus a couple of new studio tracks. However, the band has emerged from the studio with at least a dozen new songs. What to do? The tentative plan calls for a double album, with one side of live hits, one with new material. (U-2 leader Bono is so proud of the new stuff that he’s been telling friends “this is our first rock ‘n’ roll album”). . . . In addition to Starship’s new “Wild Again” single, the upcoming sound track for “Cocktail” (the new Tom Cruise film), features “Powerful Stuff” by the Fabulous Thunderbirds, a John Cougar Mellencamp version of “Rave On” and a Georgia Satellites remake of “Hippy Hippy Shake.”. . . And maybe Sam Kinison is the world’s first heavy-metal comic. He ended his recent Universal Amphitheatre shows with several jam sessions, featuring Billy Idol, his pop look-alike Leslie West and Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee and Vince Neal (who blasted out raunchy versions of “Wild Thing” and “Jailhouse Rock”). On hand to watch: rock video siren Tawny Kitaen, Sly Stallone, Sean Penn (with John Cougar Mellencamp), Dweezil Zappa, Guns ‘N Roses’ Flash, the Cult’s Ian Astbury & Billy Duff and Taime Downe.
