Re the article on Michael Tilson Thomas by Mark Swed (“Tilson Thomas: Back to His Roots in L.A.,” June 19):

Having known this remarkable musician and conductor since his student days at USC (I was dean of the USC School of Performing Arts from 1969 to 1982), I can take vicarious pride in his many artistic accomplishments, particularly the role he has had in shaping the New World Symphony.

I wish to correct a minor factual error in the otherwise admirable article. The New World Symphony was conceived, organized and formally established two years ago by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and not by Mr. and Mrs. Ted Arison as indicated by Swed. The Arisons are extraordinary generous trustees of our foundation.
