Local News in Brief : Meeting on Pier Rebuilding
The Redondo Beach City Council will hold a public meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday to listen to ideas about rebuilding the city-owned pier, which was ravaged by fire.
“We’re simply going to listen to anybody who wants to give us an idea on the pier redesign,” City Manager Tim Casey said.
The May 27 blaze, which apparently started in electrical wiring beneath one of the restaurants, destroyed 15 businesses and 34,000 square feet of the horseshoe-shaped section of the pier. Damage was estimated at $7 million.
Two days later, wind-swept waves caused an additional $1.25 million in damage to the pier. A month earlier, waves had caused $1.25 million damage to the pier and demolished a popular 155-foot fishing promenade.
City officials estimate that it will take two years to rebuild the pier and another year to replace the restaurants and shops on top of it.
City officials are considering holding a design contest for the pier’s reconstruction; building a taller and larger pier; replacing the primarily wooden pier with a steel or concrete one; spacing the restaurants and shops farther apart, and building a public seating area.
About 40 businesses on the pier and adjacent boardwalk were not damaged and remain open.
