Local News in Brief : Deputy Dropped From Suit

A woman who had claimed that three sheriff’s deputies killed her daughter after the young woman refused to have sex with them has dropped one of the deputies from her civil suit and plans to drop another, her attorney said Monday.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in March, Mary Postma claimed that Deputies Robert Waters, Robert Mallon and Mike Turner killed her daughter, Catherine Braley, 26, after picking her up at a Van Nuys bar Jan. 14.

In court papers, Mallon said he had consensual sex with Braley after leaving the bar. He denied harming her and said he dropped her off about a block from where her body was found.

Postma’s attorney, Stephen Yagman, said Monday that he has requested the dismissal of Turner from the lawsuit and plans to request the dismissal of Waters because of insufficient evidence.
