HEART BYPASS SURGERY IN CALIFORNIA IN 1986

These 17 Southern California hospitals with between 10 and 100 heart bypass surgeries during 1986 were omitted from a table published Sunday. As a group, California hospitals with fewer than 100 bypass surgeries had significantly higher death rates than those with more surgeries.

Patient who underwent heart valve replacement are included in the count of total surgeries but not in the list of hospitals with high or low bypass surgery death rates that was published Sunday. There was a less than 5% probability that a hospital was listed as having a high-or low-mortality rate because of chance alone.
