Municipal Judge Jonathan H. Cannon was elected chairman of the Garden Grove advisory arts panel Tuesday during its first meeting.
The bitterly divided Garden Grove City Council established the 15-member advisory panel earlier this month to help resolve its paralysis over the role of publicly supported arts in their community. The five councilmen have been unable to agree on whether to fund the Grove Shakespeare Festival.
Cannon said Wednesday that the panel’s considerations would include current and future use of city arts facilities, funding of arts groups, and cooperation among such groups.
Cannon was mayor of Garden Grove from 1980-87, making him one of the longest tenured mayors in the state. He resigned to accept an appointment by Gov. George Deukmejian to the Westminster Municipal Court.
The advisory panel will meet again on Aug. 20.
