President Reagan praised the policies of reform-minded Hungarian leader Karoly Grosz and said his visit to the United States marks a historic change in relations. “We have been impressed by your openness to new ideas,” Reagan said. “We know that the Hungarian people can better itself if the greater social and economic reforms now being discussed are steadfastly implemented.” Reagan spoke at the White House after more than two hours of discussions with Grosz, focusing on the reforms and bilateral relations. Replying to Reagan, Grosz spoke of the “enormous tasks” faced by Hungary in reorganizing its economy.
