NORFOLK, Va. —
Five U.S. sailors were in the brig Wednesday, accused of helping an Irish girl stow away aboard a destroyer sailing to the United States, Navy officials said.
The 16-year-old girl was taken to Portsmouth Naval Hospital and treated for dehydration after the destroyer Conyngham docked Saturday. She was to be flown back to Ireland but her trip was delayed when she became ill, authorities said.
The girl told officials she had been an orphan and wanted to come to the United States to find a job, a Navy spokesman said.
