The U.S. Olympic Foundation’s president says he’s “shocked” that the Los Angeles City Council has asked for the resignation of foundation trustees who support investments in South African businesses.

The council Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution seeking the resignations, contending that the investment policy was inconsistent with U.S. policy.

“I’m surprised and shocked; they have nothing to do with the Olympic Foundation,” F. Don Miller, president of the organization, said Wednesday. “It is interesting to note that the Los Angeles City Council voted not to contribute one single dime of taxpayers’ money and provided no support during the 1984 Games.”

Los Angeles Councilman Nate Holden, who introduced the resolution, said, “The Board of Trustees is out of step with almost everyone in the world and they stand out like sore thumbs.”
