Local News in Brief : Dukakis Campaigner
Los Angeles Fire Commissioner Harold Kwalwasser said Thursday that he is resigning to join the presidential campaign of Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis.
Kwalwasser, 41, has been named deputy director of the campaign for Michigan. In addition to resigning from the commission, Kwalwasser is also taking a leave of absence from his position of partner with the downtown law firm of Tuttle and Taylor. The firm has strong ties to Dukakis through campaign director Susan Estrich, who was formerly a partner with Tuttle and Taylor.
Kwalwasser had been a strong backer of former Arizona Gov. Bruce Babbitt, who dropped out of the race for the Democratic presidential nomination earlier this year. In 1980, Kwalwasser was deputy director of former President Jimmy Carter’s campaign in California.
Kwalwasser was appointed to the board by Mayor Tom Bradley in 1984 and served as board president in 1987-88.
