OBITUARIES : Ursula Baumann Vils; Helped Mold Times’ View Section

Ursula Baumann Vils, whose byline appeared in the View and Family sections of The Times for more than 20 years, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank after what her husband described as a long illness. She was 59.

A graduate of the USC School of Journalism, Mrs. Vils joined the staff of the old Valley Times in 1951 as assistant women’s editor, moved to the Hollywood Citizen-News as women’s editor in 1954 and then became city editor of that paper’s San Fernando edition. She joined the Los Angeles Mirror as a feature writer in 1960 and came to The Times in 1962 as a promotion writer after the Mirror closed, moving to the View section in 1964.

During the next two decades she helped the old Family section evolve from an emphasis on society news to today’s View section that contains general interest feature stories.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth, and sons Kenneth and James.

A funeral Mass will be said at 9 a.m. Saturday at Our Mother of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, 2060 N. Vermont Ave., Los Angeles.
