Local News in Brief : Laguna Beach : Beach Closed After Spill Is Reopened

Share

A stretch of the beach closed since last Sunday because of a sewage spill was reopened to swimmers and surfers Friday afternoon after tests determined that all traces of contamination were gone, according to Steven K. Wong of the Orange County Health Care Agency.

The beach between Cleo and Legion streets had been declared unsafe after about 30,000 gallons of raw sewage overflowed from a pump station that had been shut down by a power failure.

It was the second such accident this year. The city’s Main Beach was closed for two days in May after 1 million gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the ocean.
