Three’s Company and Dancers’ 15th anniversary season will feature fewer San Diego performances and its first appearance ever in the American dance capital of New York. “We’ve decided to put all our eggs in one basket and perform at the Merce Cunningham Studio in New York next year,” said Jean Isaacs, co-director of the company. “We’ll be the first San Diego dance company to show there, and it’s a big step for us. But we’re going out on a limb for it, and that means we can’t afford to do as much here.” Consequently, the local 1988-89 season will see just one major concert, a two-weekend anniversary gala at the Mandell Weiss Center for the Performing Arts in January, and a low-tech season-opener (Sept. 9-10) at the company’s Hillcrest studio. The January performances will feature world premieres by company choreographers Isaacs, Nancy McCaleb, and Betzi Roe and special guest appearances by the 70-voice San Diego Men’s Chorus, directed by Gary Holt. The September program of repertory favorites will include the U.S. premiere of a new duet by Isaacs, shown earlier this summer in Switzerland and Italy.
