The Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert A. K. Runcie, sent a bishop to Lebanon last week on a secret mission aimed at securing the indirect release of three British hostages there, including his special envoy, Terry Waite, a Church of England spokesman said in London. The bishop for Cyprus and the Persian Gulf, John Brown, was dispatched “to talk to Christian religious leaders” in Lebanon about the fate of four Iranians who were kidnaped by Christian milia members there six years ago. The church hopes that Iran in return will use its influence with pro-Iranian groups believed to be holding the British hostages.
