Democratic senators worked to draft a compromise package of new assistance to the Nicaraguan Contras that would keep pressure on the Sandinista government while helping the Democrats sidestep their political problems with the Contra issue. Senate Majority Leader Robert C. Byrd said he hopes such a package could be assembled by midweek. Then, he said, he would take the plan to Senate Republican Leader Bob Dole and seek a bipartisan accord. Dole has proposed his own Contra aid plan, including $27 million in non-lethal assistance and $20 in eventual military aid.
