The La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art begins a six-film tribute to director Alfred Hitchcock tonight with a screening of the 1934 version of “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” starring Peter Lorre. Hitchcock remade the film with James Stewart in 1956, in the slick Hollywood phase of his career. The earlier film, made in the director’s native England, was the first in a series of thrillers that brought international attention to him and eventually led to his migration to Hollywood. Subsequent screenings include “The 39 Steps” (Aug. 17), “Secret Agent” (Aug. 31), “Sabotage” (Sept. 7), “Young and Innocent” (Sept. 14) and “The Lady Vanishes” (Sept. 21). Admission is $3 general, $2 for museum members. Each show begins at 7:30 p.m.
