Judicial Costs

Share

There is a simple, though politically unpopular, solution to the court’s money crunch (“The Games People Play With Justice,” Op-Ed Page, July 27): make the judicial system more user-funded.

It costs only $131 to file a complaint in Superior Court in L.A. County. That is one-half of 1% of the $25,000 minimum claim required, and insignificant compared to what the parties will pay in legal fees. The argument that raising court fees hurts the middle class is nonsense; the losing party reimburses the winner. Parties and lawyers should not be filing suits they do not expect to win.
