Social Programs

Your article (“Congress Looks to Business to Pay for Social Programs,” Part I, July 24) stated that Democrats in Congress will be trying to get businesses to pick up the tab for their social agenda. This would be disastrous for our economy. The added cost in many situations would cause businesses to raise prices.

Inflation is only one of the negative results. Higher prices would mean fewer sales domestically and internationally, thus, fewer jobs and higher unemployment. If prices could not be raised because of foreign competition, the businesses would probably reduce or discontinue production of the products, again fewer jobs. The imposition of added costs for businesses, such as mandatory employee benefits, plant closing notifications and higher minimum wages, can only result in inflation and more unemployment.
