Two news organizations asked a federal appeals court in Los Angeles to reverse two federal court judges’ rulings and authorize the release of sealed search warrants in the Defense Department’s fraud probe. Attorneys for The Times and the Copley Press asked that the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals consider the matter on an emergency basis. The news organizations want access to documents filed in Los Angeles and San Diego in the widespread fraud investigation. The probe, which became public last month, centers on allegations that defense industry consultants bribed Pentagon officials for information that helped contractors win multimillion-dollar contracts.
