Peruvian police have rearrested an American woman on terrorism charges, months after she was acquitted of such accusations and released from a federal prison, her Peruvian lawyer said. Cynthia Stowell McNamara, 39, was first arrested in December and charged with leading a Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) guerrilla attack that claimed the lives of two Peruvian officials in August, 1987. McNamara, who was born in Philadelphia and raised in Chicago, spent four months in prison before authorities dropped the charges and released her in May. She has denied any involvement with the guerrillas and said she was in Peru pursuing her interest in anthropology. The U.S. Embassy said it is looking into her arrest.
