Evelyn Ashford, Olympic 100-meter champion, raced to victory in that event, and fellow 1984 gold medalist Joaquim Cruz won a 1,000-meter race in an international track and field meet at Viareggio, Italy.

Ashford, second at the U.S. trials last month in the 100 meters, won in 11.23 seconds, finishing ahead of Diane Williams of the U.S. (11.56) and third-place Marisa Masullo of Italy (11.78).

Cruz, who won the 800 meters in the Los Angeles Games, won the 1,000 ahead of Alessandro Lambruschini of Italy. Cruz, of Brazil, finished in 2 minutes 7.85 seconds in only his sixth race this season.

Other U.S. winners were Antonio McKay in the 400 meters (45.08 seconds), Mark Deady in the 1,500 meters (3:39.65), Dave Kenworthy in the pole vault (18 1/2 feet) and David Patrick in the 400-meter hurdles (50.70 seconds).
