Joseph Costa; Longtime Photojournalist

Joseph Costa, 84, a founder of the National Press Photographers Assn. and a former photojournalism instructor at Ball State University in Indiana. Costa, whose photojournalism career spanned more than 65 years, including 19 years at the New York Daily News, was the first president of the national press photographers group, chairman of its board for 16 years and editor of the organization’s National Press Photographer magazine for 21 years. He photographed many of the major news events of this century, and was well known for his nationwide campaign to permit cameras in courtrooms. In Carmel, Calif., on Monday.
