Negotiators from Angola, Cuba and South Africa held a marathon negotiating session and voiced optimism that they are moving closer to an Angolan cease-fire and peace in southern Africa. “There has been a narrowing of positions,” South Africa’s chief delegate, Neil van Heerden, said after the 11-hour session at Geneva’s International Conference Center. The U.S. mediator, Assistant Secretary of State Chester A. Crocker, said the talks, which had been due to end, will continue today for an extra day. A key issue is a timetable for Cuban troop withdrawal from Angola.
