Share

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department has acquired a new dog to sniff out explosives.

The dog, Casey, replaces Sam, an 11-year-old dog that was put to sleep recently after he became ill.

The department said the Sheriff’s Explosive Detection Canine Program has grown since 1983 when a dog was used in 16 search-and-rescue operations. Last year, dogs were used in 109 incidents.

Casey cost $4,100 to purchase and train. He was donated by the Sheriff’s Advisory Council. A report to the Board of Supervisors asks that the new dog be listed in the county’s “fixed asset inventory.”
