Local News in Brief : Ex-Official Won’t Be Tried

Former Los Angeles Harbor Commissioner Michael Schwab, who resigned last year amid allegations that he misappropriated some of the funds from a union grievance settlement, will not be prosecuted by federal authorities.

Schwab, 42, of Wilmington, was serving as business manager of the Pile Drivers Local 2375 in 1986 when three members complained that they did not receive their share of the $9,000 settlement. The U.S. Labor Department investigated and recommended prosecution, but federal authorities have decided that there is insufficient evidence to file charges, a Labor Department official said.

Schwab, who also lost his union position over the allegations, said: “I’m just glad to see justice prevails. You know, I’ve always felt I was innocent from Day 1.”
