World record-holder Ben Johnson, competing for the first time since pulling a hamstring in the spring, was timed in 10.38 seconds in a 100-meter heat at the Canadian track and field championships at Ottawa.

Johnson proclaimed himself fit from the injury he sustained May 13 at Tokyo. “I’m in the best shape of my life,” he said. “I ran very fast times in practice and I’m faster than last year.”

Johnson, who set a world record of 9.83 in the 100 last summer at the World Championships at Rome, added: “I came up pretty good out of the blocks and for the first 30 meters, then eased up.”
