General Motors and National Car Rental are negotiating for GM to acquire a minority equity share of National, the nation’s third-largest car rental company, officials for both firms said. Meanwhile, Paine Webber Group Inc. said it had agreed to sell its stake in National to Fidelco Capital Group, one of its partners in the 1986 buyout of National from Household International Inc. Terms deal were not disclosed. GM once owned the predecessor to Hertz car rental but sold that business in 1953. Rival Ford Iotor is one of the current owners of Hertz.
