Indian officials said they have given up hope of finding survivors among the more than 400 Hindu pilgrims missing after an overcrowded ferry capsized in the rain-swollen Ganges River. News reports said 40 bodies were recovered, but officials said the actual death toll may never be known. There are 100 known survivors from the accident. The ferry, carrying more than 500 passengers, capsized Saturday near Katihar, about 650 miles east of New Delhi and 180 miles from Patna, the capital of Bihar state. Most of the passengers were Hindu pilgrims on their way to visit religious shrines in the town of Sahibganj, 125 miles east of Patna.
